Ages 8–10

Rising Luminaries

A creative learning studio for kids ages 8–10. Rising Luminaries develop design thinking, maker fluency, and real-world problem solving through meaningful projects and hands-on exploration.

Overview

Rising Luminaries treats children as capable makers. They study material, prototype solutions, present work, and lead within the pod — building confidence that transfers to school, home, and life.

Learning outcomes

  • Approach a problem with observation, sketch, prototype, and iterate.
  • Choose materials and techniques deliberately for a goal.
  • Give and receive useful feedback with peers.
  • Present work clearly to a real audience.

Skills developed

  • Applied art — printing, fiber, clay, drawing, mixed media
  • Design thinking and iteration
  • Tool stewardship and studio safety
  • Collaboration and pod leadership
  • Entrepreneurship through the Wunder Mix enterprise
  • Public presentation at showcase nights

Example projects

  • Design something useful — object that solves a real household problem
  • Field challenge — a design brief tied to a real-world constraint
  • Wunder Mix enterprise — small-batch product designed and sold at the Luminaries Market
  • Exhibition Night capstone show for families

Program structure

Three-journey progression across Fall and Spring semesters. Each journey revisits the same learning outcomes with more independence, complexity, and leadership expectations.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need art experience to join Rising Luminaries?

No. Every Rising Luminary starts at Journey One of the Rising arc. Prior experience is welcome but never required — the studio is designed to meet children where they are.

How is this different from a typical after-school art class?

Rising Luminaries develops design thinking, applied art, problem solving, and leadership through real projects — not just techniques. Children learn to observe, propose, prototype, and present work to peers and families.

What tools and materials do children use?

Age-appropriate real tools: printing presses, sewing, clay, wood, natural dye, drawing tools, and simple electronics. Safe use is taught explicitly as part of the Tool Steward badge.
